Your nightguard has been custom-made to protect your teeth from damage caused by clenching and grinding (bruxism) while you sleep. It helps prevent tooth wear, jaw pain, and other complications.

How to wear your nightguard

  • Wear your nightguard every night while sleeping, unless otherwise advised by your dentist. Initially, please start gradually, 15 mins the first night and increase the time every night until you can sleep with it. This can take up to six weeks.
  • Gently place it over your upper or lower teeth (depending on your custom fit).
  • Bite down lightly to ensure it sits comfortably.
  • Do not force it if it feels uncomfortable—contact us for adjustments.

Cleaning your nightguard

Proper cleaning prevents bacteria, plaque, and bad odours:

  1. Rinse your nightguard under cold water immediately after removal.
  2. Brush gently with a soft toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste or mild soap.
  3. Avoid hot water, which can warp the nightguard.
  4. Store in the protective case provided, away from direct sunlight.
  5. Clean the case regularly to prevent bacterial buildup.
  6. Place the nightguard in a glass of cold water and a denture cleaning tablet once a week.

What to expect:

  • You may feel slight pressure on your teeth at first. This is normal and usually improves within a few days.
  • Minor increased saliva or mild jaw soreness may occur initially.
  • Consistent use will gradually reduce tooth wear, clenching, and grinding-related discomfort.

Tips for comfort and longevity:

  • Avoid chewing gum or biting on the nightguard.
  • Keep the nightguard away from pets—they are prone to chew it!
  • Check for signs of wear; report cracks, rough edges, or damage promptly.
  • If it becomes loose or uncomfortable, do not attempt to adjust it yourself. Contact the practice for a professional adjustment.

Follow-up care

  • Bring your nightguard to your dental check-ups for inspection.
  • Regular reviews allow us to monitor your bite, jaw, and nightguard condition.
